Editor's Log
Renewed Growth in a Pandemic World
By Rober Carpenter, Editor-in-Chief
August is upon us and already there are those lamenting a lost 2020, calling it a year of failure. Granted, to date, 2020 has been a year of sickness, a year of protest, a year of violence, a year of lunacy. However, I don’t buy that it has been a year of failure.
To be sure, those who seek failure will find it. No doubt dramatic change is upon us in many ways. Not just in how we do business, but in how we approach business. But I don’t buy just brushing off 2020 as a lost cause. Those who see the failures of 2020 are short-sighted, constricted with tunnel vision.
Growth is always a challenge. Sustaining your business and pushing growth forward in difficult business climates – such as 2020 – is a massive challenge indeed, yet absolutely essential for prosperity. And to ensure our ability to thrive in 2021, we must continue to push success in 2020. Certainly, a daunting task, yet achievable for most and important to all. Expansion in a downturn seems almost counter intuitive yet while others falter, the aggressive businesses survive and thrive when markets regain their strength.
Our company, Gulf Energy Information, has been considering a new growth option for energy infrastructure. The gas utility market is a critical industry yet underserved by business media. Natural gas is the answer to North America’s ever-expanding energy appetite in an economical and environmentally friendly manner. It’s a story worth telling and a market deserving of quality media coverage and support. So, in the middle of the disillusionment of 2020, we’re stepping up to not only cover this market, but to continue the growth of our business.
To aid industry personnel in their quest to deliver high quality services, Gas Utility has been launched as a new adventure in media publishing. It targets managers and senior personnel of North America’s gas utilities. Joining the Gulf Publishing family of outstanding media products, Gas Utility, through weekly e-newsletters, a monthly technology report and a timely and interactive website, will delve into the important issues and needs of the gas utility markets including technology, operations management and industry best practices
While there is much ado about alternatives fuels, the reality is that it will be many years, probably several decades, before alternative fuels are discovered to fully replace North America’s voracious demand for carbon-based energy. While gas is often lumped into “dirty” carbon energy with coal and oil, nothing could be further from the truth. Gas is amazingly affordable, plentiful and extremely energy efficient.
To meet the steadily growing demands for natural gas, both commercial and residential, gas distribution utilities have been in scramble mode for several years, seeking to ensure ready access to gas supply; steadily expanding, updating and rehabilitating their distribution networks; and increasing power generation capabilities. All this why endeavoring to be good corporate and community neighbors by supplying safe energy in an efficient and low carbon manner.
It is no easy task. It takes constant vigilance, system monitoring and updates, technology advances and operation improvements and streamlining. But gas utility systems are up to the task, whether they are one of the top 200 major gas utilities or many municipal organizations.
We are excited to cover and become embedded within this unique and vibrant market. Sister media Underground Construction and Pipeline & Gas Journal bring many years of experience in various aspects of the gas market and will support the efforts of new Gas Utility Managing Editor Brianna Rodriguez. In her new role, she will explore and produce significant content about the important needs and technology impacting gas utilities today.
In additional to the e-newsletters and website, a new conference, UtiliTech, will be co-located with the annual UCT event next January in Nashville. A focused program track and exhibit area will highlight technology, ops and other challenges of the LDC world.
Gas Utility will deliver a quality information and education source to an industry that in some ways has been isolated and overlooked in the modern industry forum. Your stories now have a voice; your needs now have a fountain of important information delivered on
a steady basis.
What are you doing to make 2020 a year of plenty and 2021 a year to thrive? •
