Calling 811 before any digging begins starts the process of identifying and marking buried utility lines in the United States and preventing the damage, service disruption, injuries, potential fines and costly repairs that result from unintentionally hitting them.
The specifics, however, vary by state, as shown in the directory below. Compiled from various sources, the details include program name and informational website for each state’s One Call Center, or multiple centers in some cases. It also gives the state rules for safe digging, such as the advance notice required and how long the marks (paint, flags, stakes, etc.) are valid.
In addition, a Web Ticket Entry system offers excavators/ contractors in the state the option of giving advance notice online—instead of by phone— as well as to search, view and update locate requests.
While the One Call program covers all of North America, calling 811 does not. Please note the individual phone numbers shown in the Canada listing at the end of this directory.
