PPI Announces Awards Winners
The Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) announced winners of its 2019 awards program, including several who are familiar to the underground utility infrastructure construction and rehabilitation sectors.
Project of the Year in the Drainage Division was awarded to Rick Christie, representing Pacific Corrugated Pipe Company, of Newport Beach, Calif., and the products supplied for the Terror Lake Upper Hidden Basin Diversion project in Kodiak, Alaska. A 1.2-mile tunnel was constructed using Pacific Corrugated’s StormTite high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe underneath Kodiak Island’s National Wildlife Refuge, and the company’s HDPE pipe was used to build cross drain roadway culverts, improving vehicle access to the dam, tunnel locations and Upper Valleys.
In the Municipal & Industrial Division, Mary Houston accepted a Project of the Year award on behalf of Pipeline Plastics LLC, based in Westlake, Texas, and the long-term HDPE solution it provided for a North Pole, Alaska, 35-mile potable water pipeline, expansion of the water treatment plant and a 75,000-gallon potable water reservoir.
PPI members voted Jim Johnston, of McElroy Manufacturing, as “Member of the Year” in the Municipal & Industrial Division. He was recognized for contributing his time and expertise to support the use of HDPE pipe in water and waste water applications as part of the Municipal Advisory Board, AWWA and at trade shows, and in the development and writing of technical documents. He was also named Member of the Year in the Energy Piping System Division.
