In October, Caterpillar Inc. celebrated the 40,000th Cat large dozer rolling off the production line in East Peoria, Ill., with the customer receiving it, Teck Resources Limited, and dealer Finning Canada. Also attending were employees from Caterpillar’s Building SS, where all 40,000 Cat D9, D10 and D11 dozer models have been manufactured.

“Caterpillar transformed the track-type tractor with the introduction of the suspended undercarriage with elevated drive sprocket,” said Greg Hepler, Caterpillar product manager for large dozers. “These iconic machines continue to define who we are and play a key role in building a better world.”

Teck Resources, the world’s second-largest seaborne exporter of steelmaking coal, currently operates numerous Cat dozers, each logging up to 7,000 hours per year in a demanding, high-production mining application. The 40,000th unit, a 225,000-pound D11T, will perform production dozing, dump area support, mining shovel support and haul road development for five mines near Sparwood, British Columbia.

The D11T is equipped with a powerful Cat C32 engine, producing 850 horsepower and capable of moving up to 900 loose cubic meters of material per hour. Its rugged mainframe is designed for multiple rebuilds and lowest total cost of ownership, and a host of standard and optional Cat technologies further increase operating efficiencies, advance safe operation and lower costs.
