Prysmian to Develop New Submarine Cable System in Canada
Prysmian Group was awarded a new $21.8-million contract by New Brunswick Power Corporation (NB Power), the largest electric utility in the Atlantic Canada.
The Fundy Isles Project involves the development of a new submarine cable link that will upgrade the capacity of the existing submarine transmission system in the Passamaquoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy. This new power cable link will connect Deer Island, Campobello Island and Grand Manan Island to the mainland power grid in the Canadian province.
Prysmian Group will be responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of a 300-square-meter, 69 k volt, three-core submarine cable system with XLPE insulation, for a total of 20 kilometers. Completion of the project is scheduled for October 2019.
All submarine core cables will be produced at Prysmian’s Montereau, France, facility, while the cable armoring will be manufactured at Prysmian’s factory in Nordenham, Germany, which joined the group following the merger with General Cable.
Significant challenges include installation in an area with the highest tides in the world and very strong currents—Passamaquoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy. Also, the submarine route crosses an extensive fishing area, limiting the time window for installation operations.
