Utility Investigation School Scheduled at TTC
Geophysics for Subsurface Utility Engineering Professionals Short Course Offered
The Trenchless Technology Center (TTC) at Louisiana Tech University, in conjunction with the ASCE’S Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI), have teamed up to hold the second TTC/UEIS School from Feb. 26 to March 2.
This short course will give practitioners the knowledge and tools to provide competent utility investigations in accordance with accepted national standards (ASCE 38-02), and to defend against claims through this knowledge and its documentation. In addition to the classroom lectures, practical sessions offer participants hands-on experience with ground penetrating radar (GPR) and other methods. This five-day school will be taught by the foremost experts in the geophysics and subsurface utility engineering field.

DOTs and local highway agencies, regulatory agencies, local governments
The use of GPR for utility locating will be covered, as well as GPR theory and factors affecting GPR penetration. A major component of this course is field experience. Students will learn to setup the equipment and proper surveying techniques (line scan and grid scan), including the use of GPS. Data will be downloaded and reviewed in the software, along with various data outputs and reports. Case studies and data interpretation will also be taught.
The course director is Tom Iseley, Ph.D., P.E. of the TTC. The primary instructor is Jim Anspach, Cardno Inc., Utility Engineering Practice Leader. He is also the current president of the UESI board of governors. Sponsoring organizations include UESI, NUCA, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and media sponsor Underground Construction.
At the end of this short course, students will receive four CEUs or 40 PDHs and a certificate of completion.
