Unconventional Shoring System Overcomes Challenging Storm-Sewer Construction

Efficiency Production supplied the shoring solution for a complex infrastructure project in Columbus, Ohio. Installing a new sewer system actually involved four different excavation points, each a different depth and with different-sized pipes, structures and/or manholes to install within; and some with different soil conditions and existing crossing utilities to navigate. Further complicating matters, the location was over a one-block length, bordered narrowly between a busy interstate highway section and an apartment building.

All four excavation points were deeper than 5 feet, requiring trench protection. The difficult site made “dig-and-push” shoring, commonly associated with slide rail systems, the only option.

Slide rail is installed by sliding steel panels (similar to trench shield sidewalls) into integrated rails on vertical steel posts, then pushing the panels and posts incrementally down to grade as the pit is dug.

As a “positive” shoring system, slide rail maintains constant pressure against the sides of the excavation and requires no over-digging. This prevents possibly undermining or disturbing the surrounding foundations of buildings, roads  or other structures.

The Efficiency Production-manufactured slide rail system delivered the effectiveness, versatility and safety needed for the challenging, multi-pit project, even enabling the contractor to make on-the-fly design changes when the existing, 96-inch storm sewer was not in the exact location indicated by the site plan.

Efficiency Production, a Trinity Shoring Products company, is a leading manufacturer of trench shielding and trench shoring systems for safe and cost-effective installation of utility systems and infrastructure improvements.
