ASCE Publishes Books For Underground Infrastructure

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has published three new technical books related to underground infrastructure construction and rehabilitation. They can be purchased online by visiting “Publications” at asce.org.

Standard Practice for Direct Design of Precast Concrete Pipe for Jacking in Trenchless Construction, Standards ASCE/CI 27-17, a revision of ASCE 27-00, is useful as a reference to civil engineering design professionals, consultants, owners, and transportation officials planning to use pipe jacking in trenchless installations.

The book covers piping intended for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, stormwater and drainage, as well as for utilities and access ways. Design and analysis methods are considered for the interaction between pipe, soil and group envelope, and procedures for calculating the required reinforcement in the pipe wall are included. Appendixes offer standard practice for manufacturing suitable pipe, managing jacking operations, and estimating the required jacking force.

Pilot Tube and Other Guided Boring Methods, manual of practice (MOP) 133, is an important guide for engineers, contractors, and utility owners looking to install, replace, or upgrade utility pipelines. It details an effective tool for the accurate installation of small-diameter pipelines, pilot tube and guided boring methods. Chapter topics include project planning, site and geotechnical assessment, shaft design, pipe characteristics and design, contract documents, and construction aspects.

Water Pipeline Condition Assessment, MOP 134, focusing on the larger-diameter transmission pipelines of water utilities, rather than the smaller-diameter distribution systems, provides technical information and recommendations to set priorities and obtain an accurate determination of the condition of the individual pipelines and pipeline systems.

The book discusses data collection and management, planning, tools/technologies, and the condition assessment report. Seven case studies demonstrate the application of a variety of condition assessment-related technologies.
