$5 Million Awarded To Resolve Critical Water Needs at San Antonio Military Base
The Texas Military Preparedness Commission (TMPC) voted to grant $5 million to help resolve critical water needs aboard Joint Base San Antonio, TX (JBSA), under the command of United States Air Force Brig. Gen. Robert D. LaBrutta, Commander. The additional support in vital resources will ensure San Antonio’s military bases are equipped with the proper foundation to serve military needs, locally and nationally.
In a compendium of water projects built by San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS), water will be delivered to various military bases through infrastructure improvements – providing much-needed resource security for the installations, which currently face acute water challenges.
The grant affirms the value of strengthening San Antonio’s longstanding partnership with the military, said City Councilman Joe Krier.
The projects consist of running water supply lines and setting up interconnects aboard JBSA Camp Bullis, JBSA Lackland Air Force Base (AFB), Lackland AFB Training Annex and JBSA Fort Sam Houston, as well as improvements to Security Hill aboard Lackland AFB.
The ventures have garnered support from a broad base of stakeholders including the City of San Antonio; Bexar County; Alamo Area Council of Governments, TX (AACOG); SAWS; the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce; surrounding county and city government officials; and a number of state legislators, including Texas House Speaker Joe Straus.
As the official grant applicant, Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) will manage the project and – along with SAWS and with JBSA – will be the cog in the wheel of the grant and forthcoming projects.
