Glen Barton, former Caterpillar Inc. chairman and CEO, dies at age 77

Glen Barton retired in 2004 after nearly 43 years of Caterpillar service. Starting as a college graduate trainee and rising through the ranks in numerous marketing, general management and executive positions, he left a legacy of leadership at the company.

“Under his leadership, Caterpillar fully embraced 6 Sigma. It brought remarkable improvements throughout the company, including an intense focus on quality and safety,” said Chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman. “We are forever indebted to him for his commitment to making Caterpillar a stronger company.”

Equally strong was his commitment to the Peoria community.  “Glen’s dedication and hard work will continue to leave a positive impact for many, many future generations,” Oberhelman added. “Together with his wife Polly, Glen was the epitome of philanthropic leaders.”

A native of Alton, MO, Barton graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor’s in civil engineering, and completed the Stanford University Executive Program.

During his career he served on the Dean’s Engineering Advisory Council at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the boards of directors for Inco Limited and Newmont Mining Corporation. He was a global advisor to The Conference Board and a trustee of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Foundation. Barton also served as a member of the Business Roundtable, the Illinois Business Roundtable and the U.S. President’s Export Council.
