INGAA, CEPA Boards Vote To Certify Pipeline Inspectors By 2018
The board of directors for the Interstate Natural Gas Association of American (INGAA) and INGAA Foundation, along with the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) and the CEPA Foundation, voted to endorse a program tailored to certify pipeline inspectors conducting work for their member companies by 2018.
The decision is in line with the INGAA board’s commitment to zero pipeline incidents; having certified inspectors assists in getting everyone onboard with raising the bar, said Don Santa, INGAA President and CEO.
American Petroleum Institute (API) RP 1169, Recommended Practice for Basic Inspection Requirements for New Pipeline Construction was made available in the U.S. in November 2014, serving as an inspector certification test providing an industry-wide credential for inspection of onshore pipelines – the test will meet Canada’s industry requirements this spring.
While eligibility to take the test encompasses all pipeline inspectors regardless of their training and education backgrounds, inspectors can also choose to complete additional testing in pursuit of becoming a specialty inspector for areas including pipeline welding
or coating.
The INGAA and CEPA Foundations aim for continual improvements to the inspector certification program with efforts that include working with API to develop future versions of the API 1169 certification test.
