Houston Firm to Complete Complex, 54-inch Gravity Sewer Line Project One Year Early

Gravity Sewer Line ProjectThis year, BRH-Garver Construction of Houston, a firm with heavy focus in complex civil construction, will complete the 54-inch Gravity Sewer Line Project for the city of Houston Department of Public Works, entailing the installation of 54-inch jacking pipe, manufactured by Hobas Pipe USA, for the Lift Station Renewal and Replacement Program. The project began in 2014 aiming to maintain permit compliance and support reliable operations of the lift stations, and it will reach completion one year ahead of schedule.

Hobas’ centrifugally cast, fiberglass reinforced, polymer mortar (CCFRPM) pipe was used in this phase of the project, which included 14,700 feet of 54-inch diameter, 540-ton jacking pipe.

The existing line runs along Renwick Drive from Braeswood Boulevard to Gulfton Drive in the Bellaire area of Houston. The new line was installed along the same alignment of the existing line, making trenchless methods an absolute necessity within the booming urban district. The jacking pits are being installed from the southern portion of the project, moving north along Renwick Drive, with an average jacking length of just over 700 feet and shafts being placed accordingly.

According to David Ellett, vice president of BRH- Garver, the design flow line is approximately 22-feet deep, putting the shafts anywhere from 23- to 25-feet deep.

While the original project was slated for completion 34 months after commencement, the use of two microtunnel boring machines and commendable project management efforts is helping the firm complete the project well ahead of its projected schedule. www.hobaspipe.com, www.brhgarver.com.
