Thunder Products Introduces Large HDD Recycling System

A first look at new products and technologyThunder Products is introducing a new Thunderstorm drilling fluid recycling system at the 2015 ICUEE show in Louisville, KY, in late September.

The Thunderstorm III becomes the largest of three fluid recycling system models in the Thunder Products lineup, said company President Dan Sharpe. It is designed for use with horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs with pullback ratings at 220,000 pounds and less with flow rate requirements up to 600 gallons per minute (gpm).

“The new Thunderstorm III is a three-tank system with a total capacity of 6,000 gallons,” said Sharpe. “It has corrugated side walls for added strength and three 20-inch manway doors for easy clean out. It has two double-deck shakers with 10 screens and air bags instead of springs. Four, 5 by 6 pumps are operated by four, 40-horsepower electric motors, all powered by a 150 kW onboard generator. A 1,000 gpm pit pump powered by a 30-horsepower electric motor is available as an option.”

The system has the same dimensions as a 40-foot shipping container and can be mounted on any shipping container chassis. The optional trailer is rated at 50,000 pounds transport weight and 85,000 static weight. It has deck capacity to haul pallets of drilling mud.

The Thunderstorm III will be available immediately after ICUEE, said Sharpe. It will be sold and serviced through the Vermeer dealer organization, as are all Thunderstorm recycling systems.

In addition to directional drilling applications, Thunderstorm recycling systems are used with water well and geothermal drilling equipment.

Other Thunderstorm models are the Thunderstorm I, designed for HDD drill rigs of less than 50,000 pounds pullback; and the Thunderstorm II for drill rigs with pullback ratings between 50,000 and 100,000 pounds.

Earlier this year, the Thunderstorm product line was purchased from Sharewell Drilling Products by Wyo-Ben. Thunder Products, now a Wyo-Ben company, is based in Ponder, TX. Wyo-Ben is a leading manufacturer of bentonite drilling fluid additives, absorbents and water treatment and testing products.

The Thunderstorm III is the first Thunder Products system introduced since the Thunderstorm product line was acquired by Wyo-Ben.
