Automotive Factory’s Pipes Repaired With CIPP Technology

Global resin supplier AOC LLC collaborated with Clean Water Works Inc. (CWW), an Ottawa-based leader in pipeline rehabilitation, to restore the sewage pipes serving an automobile factory in Windsor, Ontario.

Using polyester felt tubing saturated with AOC’s Vipel L010-PPA-33 vinyl ester resin, CWW installed 2,100 feet of cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP), drastically improving the corrosion resistance and durability of the factory’s sewage infrastructure.

The automotive plant was closed for two weeks in July 2013 to undertake several projects, including the rehabilitation of old, damaged sewer pipers made from reinforced concrete. Final approval was granted for the sewer rehabilitation just nine days before the planned shutdown. The day after the job was approved, Sandy Campbell, rehabilitation manager of CWW, placed calls to two resin suppliers indicating he would need more than 150,000 pounds of resin in a week-and-a-half for the restoration of three sewer lines.

“My job is to confirm the materials and resins, and I didn’t even know if I could pull this off on such short notice,” says Campbell. One resin supplier told Campbell that it wasn’t possible, but Brad Walker, AOC’s central region sales manager, told him, “We’ll get it done,” assuring Campbell that the products would be delivered to the site in time for the first installation on July 9.

AOC delivered more than 175,000 pounds of resin from its Ontario plant for three installations between July 9 and July 15. The first installation was 90 feet long with a 54-inch diameter and required 12,000 pounds of resin. The second was 570 feet long with a 42-inch diameter and used 26,200 pounds of resin. The third was 1,440 feet long with a 54/60-inch transitional tube and used 138,000 pounds of resin.

“Due to CWW’s dedication to the project and our supplier’s great service,” says Campbell, “we were completed and off site by July 19 – two days ahead of schedule.”
