Oil Pipeline Leaks After Damage From Excavation
In February, an underground pipeline near Alexander, ND, that was struck and damaged leaked about 400 barrels (one barrel equals 42 gallons) of crude oil, authorities said.
Most of the oil was contained in a trench being dug at the pipeline site. Targa, the company that owns the pipeline, estimates that five to 10 barrels of oil overflowed from the trench, but was being contained by berms, the health department said.
Oil was removed from the excavation with vacuum trucks and the contaminated soil was removed from the site under supervision of health department officials.
