Birmingham Water Works tries to reassure customers

The Birmingham Water Works Board is distancing itself from Jefferson County’s financial woes following a filing on Nov. 9 of the largest government bankruptcy in U.S. history, according to an article in The Birmingham News.

The water board has issued a news release to reassure its customers that “their water service is absolutely safe and sound.” The board provides billing service for the county’s sewer system and the pair often is linked in the minds of the public because of that service.

Water officials said the agency is in great financial condition, with its bonds having been upgraded by Moody’s Investors Service earlier in 2011.

“Our financial position is the strongest it has been in years and we continue to focus on being one of the best water systems in the country,” officials said in the prepared statement.
