National Public Works Week honors city with two awards
The city of Richmond, British Columbia’s Engineering and Public Works Department has recently been selected to receive two national awards sponsored by the Canadian Public Works Association (CPWA) for their 2010 National Public Works Week (NPWW) campaign.
The Public Works Open House in Richmond and other National Public Works Week events of the awareness campaign reached 5,000 citizens. The day-long open house featured live demonstrations and displays of public works activities, including a “Storm House” training facility that was set up to educate the public about the connection between sewer systems, drainage systems and the environment.
In addition, “Project WET,” a special field trip program for students in grades 4-7, was coordinated with teacher input, informed students about the importance of water quality and supply.
The Public Works Department also included a pancake breakfast at the public works garage in recognition of the “unsung heroes” of public works. At the breakfast, the city of Richmond and CUPE 394 awarded two $500 scholarships to students who had chosen to enter into a trade profession.
Celebrated from May 16 to 22, 2010, National Public Works Week annually recognizes the tens of thousands of men and women in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works. Instituted as a public education campaign by the American Public Works Association (APWA and CPWA) in 1960, National Public Works Week celebrated its 50th Anniversary this year with the May 2010 celebrations.
