Barsoom To Receive ASCE Pipeline Engineering Award
Joseph W. Barsoom, P.E., PLS, senior principal engineer, Parsons Brinckerhoff, will be honored as the recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) 2010 Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award. The award recognizes Barsoom’s contributions to the advancement of pipeline engineering, in particular his development of engineering standards and practice for trenchless rehabilitation of wastewater pipelines. He will be honored with the award during the ASCE Pipeline Conference to be held Aug. 28-Sept. 1 at the Keystone Resort & Conference Center in Dillon, CO.
The Stephen D. Bechtel Pipeline Engineering Award recognizes outstanding achievements by a member of ASCE who, through research, planning, design or construction, has advanced the art, science and technology of pipeline engineering.
In a career that spans nearly 46 years, Barsoom has been responsible for civil engineering, planning, design and construction management of public works projects. In his current role at PB, Barsoom provides technical reviews and explores new technologies to benefit clients. He acts as an advisor for trenchless technology projects including pipeline rehabilitation, microtunneling, pipe jacking, pipe reaming, pipe bursting, manhole rehabilitations, and open cut construction operations.
Barsoom’s previous experience with the city and county of Denver includes numerous levels of responsibility, from project engineer to director of engineering of the wastewater management division. His flood control design and construction projects have included dams, channels, box culverts, bridges and pipelines. In addition, Barsoom has overseen the rehabilitation sanitary sewers ranging in size from eight to 56 inches; the rehabilitation of hundreds of manholes and construction of a 178-inch flood control tunnel using microtunneling processes. He has approved new construction material specifications and construction methods, and new private improvements prepared by outside consultants and constructed by private developers.
Active in the engineering professional community throughout his career, Barsoom, as director of the municipal forum program and chair of the advisory board for the Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University and as chairman of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F-17 Committee, is considered one of the leading experts in the trenchless technology field. He is a recipient of several industry awards, and is a published author and presenter on pipeline rehabilitation at universities and professional societies in the U.S. and abroad. He earned his bachelor’s of science degree in mining engineering from Assiut University in Egypt and his master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado. Barsoom is a licensed professional engineer and professional land surveyor in Colorado.
