NASSCO Continues With Diverse Program Development

Jeff Griffin, Senior Editor

The past year has been another busy one for NASSCO – the National Association of Sewer Service Companies – as the association continues to make significant contributions to the storm and sanitary sewer rehabilitation industries.

NASSCO is a national organization composed of several hundred members representing rehabilitation industry manufacturers and suppliers, municipalities and utility districts, engineers and contracting firms.

Members will gather at Don Shula’s Hotel & Golf Club in Miami Lakes, FL, on Feb. 10 – 13 for the annual NASSCO Convention.

NASSCO was very active in its continuing efforts to advance trenchless technologies through 2009, said Ed Kampbell, who is nearing the end of his one year term as president.

“It has been a particularly good year for the industry and NASSCO,” Kampbell continued. “Our membership continues to grow, member retention is still exceptional and the association’s financial strength has never been better.”

Accomplishments
Major accomplishments in 2009 include:

  • Completion and introduction of the Inspector Training and Certification Program for CIPP (ITCP CIPP);
  • Completion and introduction of the Lateral Assessment and Certification Program (LACP);
  • Updated the Specification Guidelines for various rehabilitation products and processes and made them available free on the NASSCO web site;
  • Placed on the web site a guideline for Pipeline Assessment and Certification Program (PACP) software users; and
  • Exhibited at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Conference and WEFTEC, UCT and No Dig, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Conference, hosted an education day at the 2009 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo, and expanded participation at Water Environment Association chapter meetings.

Early in the year, NASSCO hosted an ITCP CIPP webinar which still can be accessed on the association web site.

“In addition,” said Kampbell, “a draft of a Spanish language Jetter Manual was completed, PACP standards for software was updated to version 4.4, a contract executed for updating the PACP manual and tutorial, consultations were initiated with a company specializing in human resources to formalize NASSCO’s employee policy, and a staff engineer, Diego Calderon, was hired to assist our technical director, Gerry Muenchmeyer.”

Kampbell said 2010 also will be a busy year. Programs in various stages of development include a complete revision of the Manhole Assessment & Certification Program (MACP), introduction of a chemical grouting performance specification, expansion to cover new technologies of the Inspector Training Program, and continuing to increase NASSCO’s presence and visibility in the market place

“In many ways,” concluded Kampbell, “NASSCO’S future is even brighter than its past.”

Kampbell is president of Rehabilitation Resource Solutions. His term as president of NASSCO will end at the associations 2010 annual meeting in February. Taking over as president will be Brad Dutruch, vice president of business development, Compliance EnviroSystems.

Search for New Executive Director

Looking ahead, NASSCO is seeking to fill the position of executive director to replace Irv Gemora, who plans to retire by the February 2011 annual meeting.

“As much as I have enjoyed my eight years as executive director and as much as I take pride in what we have accomplished, it is time to enter another phase of my life,” said Gemora. “That decision brings me to one of the most important jobs I have undertaken for NASSCO which is finding a replacement who has the vision, the industry knowledge, the skill set and the disposition to lead NASSCO into its very bright future. Ed Kampbell, Brad Dutruch and myself comprise the search committee who will screen the applications down to the final three for presentation to the board of directors.”

Gemora said that names and resume information of all applicants will be kept strictly confidential throughout the process of hiring the new executive director.
