Andrew Mayer Selected As UCTA MVP Winner
Andrew J. Mayer, founder and president of Murphy Pipeline Contractors Inc. (MPC), has been named the winner of the prestigious Most Valuable Professional Award sponsored by the Underground Construction Technology Association, formerly known as the Gulf Coast Trenchless Association, and Underground Construction magazine.
Mayer will be presented with the award at a special luncheon held in conjunction with the annual Underground Technology Conference & Exhibition in Tampa, FL, Jan. 19-21, 2010. Beginning with a reception at 11:30 a.m., the banquet will be held at the Tampa Convention Center, Ballroom A, adjacent to the UCT primary educational programs also are located.
The MVP Award is bestowed annually to an individual for outstanding contributions to the underground infrastructure industry.
A long-time advocate of the pipebursting method, Mayer was surprised to discover that pipebursting water mains using the pre-chlorination method in the United States was not a commonplace practice as it is in his native London. For more than a decade, contractors in England adopted the practice when the country ran out of underground space to install new pipeline, and have used it to replace nearly every water main since.
Mayer moved to Florida in May 2000, recognizing that the U.S. market was literally untapped. By November of that year, the Florida Department of the Environmental Protection Agency had approved the method of pre-chlorination and pipebursting for water mains. Since then, MPC has installed more than 200,000 feet of water main using the pre-chlorinated pipebursting method. In addition, Mayer has served as a consultant on major projects throughout the United States. By working with the American Water Works Association in Florida to spread the word about the benefits of pre-chlorinated pipebursting, Mayer has been able to help Florida water companies understand the method as an acceptable means of water main rehabilitation.
Mayer, a graduate of Gloucester Technical College, Gloucester, England, has a career spanning 28 years that covers many positions in the pipeline industry including team leader, trade foreman, construction engineer and consultant.
Jacksonville, FL-based Murphy Pipeline Contractors was established by Mayer in 2000. The company serves as an underground utility contractor specializing in water, sewer and drainage installation and refurbishments using pipebursting methods.
