Sewer line construction, 14-foot trench work to impact Honoapiʻilani Highway in Waikapū
KAHULUI, Hawai‘i (UI) — Sewer line installation work on the Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) in Waikapū will require a full road closure as crews prepare to dig a 14-foot-deep trench.
The project, part of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ Pu‘unani Homestead Subdivision, will close the highway between Kuʻikahi Drive and Pilikana Street from 5 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17. The road may reopen sooner if the work wraps up ahead of schedule.
For the duration of construction, traffic will be detoured along Kuʻikahi Drive, Waiale Road, and Waikō Road. Access to Pilikana Street will remain open, with restricted turns allowing only left entries and right exits.
Safety considerations, including the trench’s depth, make it impractical to install temporary steel plates to reopen the highway overnight. Additionally, construction is limited to daylight hours to protect seabirds during fallout season from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15, when young seabirds are vulnerable to disorientation from artificial lights.
Drivers in the area should prepare for delays and follow all detour signage for a safe and smooth experience.
