PipeSense introduces real-time pig tracking system for pipelines
PipeSense has introduced PipeTrack, a new monitoring system designed to provide real-time visibility of pipeline pigs and improve operational efficiency during pigging operations.
The system uses pressure monitoring sensors combined with signal processing and AI-enabled data analysis to track the movement of pigs through a pipeline. By analyzing pressure pulses generated during a pig run, PipeTrack can determine the pig’s location and average speed, providing operators with continuous, real-time data through a centralized dashboard.
PipeTrack is designed to reduce reliance on traditional tracking methods such as above-ground markers, acoustic monitoring and manual field checks, which can introduce uncertainty and require additional personnel. The system instead uses fixed sensor installations at above-ground access points, allowing operators to monitor pig movement without repeated equipment setup or field intervention.
According to the company, early deployments have demonstrated consistent performance in challenging operating conditions, helping reduce downtime and improve safety by minimizing the need for on-site monitoring. The technology is intended to support pipeline integrity programs by giving operators greater control and visibility during pigging operations.
