Tunnel fire injures worker at Toledo sewer repair site tied to Arlington sinkhole
(UI) — A fire inside an underground work tunnel injured a construction worker at a sewer repair project tied to the Arlington sinkhole site, according to local officials.
The incident occurred early Thursday when equipment caught fire approximately 50 feet below ground at the active jobsite, WTVG News reported. Crews were working in the tunnel at the time of the incident.
The worker was transported to a hospital for evaluation and was not reported to have sustained serious injuries.
Emergency responders, including confined space crews, were deployed to extinguish the fire and address remaining hot spots within the tunnel, per WTVG. The site is part of an ongoing effort to repair a collapsed sewer line and stabilize the area following a major sinkhole.
Project officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The impact on the construction timeline has not yet been determined.
