Fiber buildout begins across Monroe, Mich., with underground, aerial installs
MONROE, Mich. (UI) — Fiber construction is set to begin across Monroe as providers move forward with plans to expand broadband infrastructure citywide.
Two companies — Omni Fiber and Surf Internet — have submitted plans to install new fiber lines to serve most areas of the city.
Work is expected to begin in phases starting in April and continue through the year. Installation will include both aerial lines on existing utility poles and underground construction in select areas.
Residents may see crews working in neighborhoods as trenching and installation progress. City officials said temporary impacts to lawns, sidewalks and easements are expected during construction, though disturbed areas will be restored once work is complete.
The project will also include placement of ground-level equipment, such as access boxes and network connection points, used to operate and maintain the system.
Under Michigan law, telecommunications providers are allowed to use public rights-of-way to install infrastructure, requiring municipalities to permit approved projects. City officials said their role is to ensure construction meets safety standards and minimizes disruption.
The expansion is part of a broader effort to increase access to high-speed internet service and introduce additional provider options for residents.
