Alectra wins 2025 Underground Environmental Stewardship Award for cable rejuvenation gains
Alectra Utilities has been awarded Southwire’s 2025 Underground Environmental Stewardship Award, recognizing the Ontario-based utility’s leadership in using cable rejuvenation to extend underground asset life while reducing systemwide environmental impacts.
The award is based on a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) conducted to ISO 14040/14044 standards, which found that Alectra’s rejuvenation program delivers a 99.9% reduction in global warming potential (GWP) compared to full cable replacement. The study measured long-term environmental performance across a 40-year lifecycle and confirmed substantial reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions.
According to Southwire’s findings, Alectra’s efforts have achieved emissions reductions equivalent to eliminating 51 million kilometers of vehicle travel or removing 2,817 cars from the road annually. The environmental benefit also matches the yearly carbon absorption capacity of nearly 595,000 trees.
Alectra reports that feeder cables account for more than a third of total injected cable and nearly 80% of total GWP reduction within its systemwide rejuvenation program. Utility leaders say the approach supports both grid reliability and customer affordability by avoiding the costs and disruption associated with full cable replacement.
Southwire SVP Denise Voss said the award recognizes Alectra’s “continued commitment to grid reliability, affordability and sustainability,” adding that the utility’s results demonstrate how innovation can advance environmental responsibility in underground systems.
