Heath Consultants Introduces Industry-LeadingTechnologies

Heath Consultants Incorporated’s Remote Methane Leak Detector-Complete System (RMLD-CS) successfully completed the certification process to earn the Intrinsic Safety (IS) rating of Class I, Division II, which allows its use indoors and within potentially hazardous environments.

With an ergonomic, lightweight, and field-rugged design, this hand-held instrument can be operated under a variety of field conditions, including a wide temperature range, light rain, and fog. It also detects leaks remotely, creating safer surveys in difficult-to-access places, such as busy roadways, yards with dogs, fenced off areas and compressor stations.

Other features include a rechargeable and field-replaceable battery, dual battery charger, phone App support, graphical user interface, internal data logging, and GPS.

Heath’s latest generation of leak survey instruments, Detecto Pak-Infrared+ (DP-IR+), greatly improves the productivity and safety of a walking/mobile survey. This is due to its fast response and high sensitivity for detecting methane, without false alarming on other gases.

DP-IR+ operates under a variety of environments, including cold or hot weather. Its rugged design will stand up to normal field use and operating conditions.

A new, specific App provides an easy way for users to connect to Heath DP-IR+ devices, via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and capture survey data. It’s available for both iOS and Android platforms.

Gasurveyor 700 (GS700) is a highly configurable, user-friendly, infrared detection device suitable for all gas utility applications. Optional sensors include PPM, O2, CO and H2S.

The natural gas discrimination feature quickly determines the source of the gas, whether a pipeline leak or naturally occurring (biogas), saving time and reducing detection-related costs.

GS700 offers data-logging functionality, with optional GPS mapping, to simplify data gathering. The cloud-based Instrument Management System (IMS) provides access to field usage reports, calibration history, investigation mapping and more.

Based in Houston, Heath is certified as a women’s business enterprise by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).

Underground Magnetics Launches New Locating System

Underground Magnetics’ latest edition of its popular Mag Series locating system, Mag 9, delivers a huge step forward in walkover HDD locating.

When used with the Echo 110 transmitter, Mag 9 offers a true depth up to 200 feet and data range up to 360 feet, compared to competitors’ claims of 130-foot and 180-foot maximum depth ranges.

“That unmatched power,” said Mike Young, president of Underground Magnetics, “enables our customers to use a much more affordable walkover system on projects that, in the past, required much more expensive technology options.”

Paired with the Echo 50X Rebar TX technology, Mag 9 delivers 16 frequency options – from rebar mode .325 kHz, to 41kHz – and the ability to change frequencies and power downhole. This gives customers the first all-in-one transmitter designed to drill in the most difficult interference conditions.

Mag series receivers feature high-precision and high anti-interference Faraday shield 3D antenna structure. Unlike traditional HDD locating systems, Mag 9 receivers have two independent antennae, to provide better accuracy and reliability.

A 7-inch, full-color, industrial LCD screen ensures the Mag 9 is easy-to-read in all conditions. It also offers the industries’ easiest onscreen user interface, so switching back and forth between walkover and bore-to mode simply requires pressing the enter button – no depth programming is required.

Featuring four radio channels, the Mag 9 telemetry range is up to 1,800 feet with the standard antenna, or up to 3,000 feet with an extended-range antenna. Built-in data-logging capabilities mean users can automatically monitor and record bore data and profiles – allowing conditions to be measured, documented, analyzed and validated.

Sleek and lightweight (8.5 pounds) with high-performance digital signal processor (DSP); industrial-rated, gold-plated electronic modules, and advanced communication designs, Mag 9 delivers the most powerful, versatile, and easy-to-use transmitters on the market. A rechargeable 12.5V lithium battery delivers up to 50 hours of use before requiring a recharge.

“This Mag System saved us a ton of money”, said Jimmy Downing with Downing Diversified. “If not for our new Mag System and Echo 90 transmitter, a call for a wireline crew was next. We couldn’t get the job done with any other walkover we own. This locator is an absolute beast.”

With world headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, Underground Magnetics designs, produces, and services HDD locating systems. A new 40,000-squarte-foot, state-of-the-art plant currently under construction will offer expanded manufacturing and service capabilities.

Predictive Modeling Reduces Pipe-Failure Risk, Impact for Raleigh Water

Global water technology company, Xylem, helped the city of Raleigh Public Utilities Department (Raleigh Water) get a clearer picture of its 2,340 miles of pipes, some of which are more than 100 years old.

Xylem Asset Performance Optimization analyzed the utility’s entire network, combining historical pipeline break data with information from Raleigh Water using Esri ArcGIS Enterprise software. The resulting assessment identified the top 1% percent of at-risk pipeline segments, based on their probability of failure.

With this highly accurate, predictive, and targeted view of potential trouble spots throughout the city, the utility was better able to decide which ones to prioritize. In addition, the data-driven risk model supports a city-wide initiative to increase racial equity by eliminating bias from selection of infrastructure projects.

The process also increased efficiency, taking 45 percent less planning time than in the past, while avoiding unnecessary digs, reducing capital costs and water loss from pipe failures, decreasing response time and lessening other impacts on the community.

To date, Raleigh Water has planned six projects using the results of Xylem’s analyses.

“Based on what we’ve seen with Xylem’s predictive modeling services, we are confident that replacing these mains is the best bang for the buck,” said Adam Haggerty, asset manager for Raleigh Water. “This is a game changer for us, and it is something we will be able to use for a wide variety of applications.”.

Xylem is a Rye Brook, N.Y., global company committed to solving critical water and infrastructure challenges with innovation. Its solutions are creating a more sustainable world by enabling customers to optimize water and resource management and helping communities in more than 150 countries become water secure.
